The No. 12 Kentucky Wildcats are slated to take on the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens on Tuesday, January 15 at 7:00 pm EST.
While on paper it looks like it should be a win for Kentucky, their slow starts and Georgia’s home-court advantage may cause problems for the young Wildcats against the more experienced Bulldogs.
Sophomore Rayshaun Hammonds leads the Bulldogs averaging 13.9 points per game and 6.7 rebounds. Sophomore Nicolas Claxton is close behind averaging 12.6 points per game and grabs 9.5 rebounds per game, close to averaging a double-double.
If we were to guess which player would get hot from three-point range this time around against the Wildcats, it would be Tyree Crump. The junior guard has taken and made the most from beyond the arc. Crump averages 10.8 points per game and shoots 41% from three-point range.
The Wildcats are going to have to win the rebound war. The Bulldogs have three guys who have already grabbed 95+ rebounds this season, two of them over 100 (100 & 142). The Wildcats have two guys with 95+ rebounds the season with PJ Washington having 121 and Reid Travis with 97. Whichever team can control the boards will have an upper hand.
While the Bulldogs have had blowout losses this season, like their 91-67 to Georgia State, they also beat Vanderbilt by 19, the same Commodores team that push Kentucky for 40 minutes in Rupp Arena.
It’s January, anything can happen, but if the Wildcats play solid on both offense and defense and shrug off their recent slow starts and struggles, expect them to pull out a victory in Athens.
