Morgan Silver Dollars are extremely rare and they are worth thousands of dollars. These are very popular collectible coins but because of its rarity, collectors can seldom find them even with those who makes coin collecting as their career and not just a hobby. When a Morgan Silver Dollar was brought to the shop of ‘Pawn Stars,” the owner could not believe it, but how much does it really cost? Let’s go ahead and find out!
This is a United States dollar coin which was first minted in 1878 up to 1904, and also in 1921. These were the very first standard silver dollar minted before the Seated Liberty dollar production was ceased. It was designed and named by George T. Morgan, the United States Mint’s special engraver. This coin features a profile of the Lady Liberty on one side and an eagle clutching arrows with an olive branch on the other side. These rare coins are made of 90% silver and 10% copper. This is why when a person brought this to “Pawn Stars” it was an offer that the owners might not be able to refuse.
“Pawn Stars” is a very popular American reality TV series of a family-run pawnshop in Las Vegas. Owned by three generations of the Harrison family, they use their sharp-eyed skills to assess items that are real and fake. A man named Greg came into the shop with a Morgan Silver Dollar, and Rick Harrison knew that this kind of find does not happen very often. Greg showed him his Liberty Dollar and said, “I have the King of Kings of Morgan Dollars.”
Greg brought in an 1895 Philadelphia PR 64 Cameo and this is one of the very few 880 originally minted proof coins. Rick was instantly impressed and he referred this as “almost like hen’s teeth.” In the coin collecting world, 1895 Philadelphia PR 64 Cameo are extremely sought-after and Greg is looking to sell it for a good price. As Rick tried to contemplate whether to give it a go or not, Greg tried to convince him that this is a very rare piece that even Morgan Dollar collectors might not even have on their collection. When asked about how much he wants to get out of this piece, Greg said, $100,000.
Before Rick can decide, he asked Greg if he can have someone look at it, a person who works for him who knows everything about auctions, and Greg agreed. Rick wants to make sure that he can also make money out of it and said, “If the deal is right, we’ll make a deal.” Mike Long came in, the coin expert that works for the Harrisons. He confirms that this coin is definitely a rare find and according to him, out of the 880 original coins, only about a half of it exists but they are still hard to find.
“I’m asking $100,000,” Greg said and Mike was equally shocked of the amount. He explained that one of this was sold for $52,000 and another for $48,000. Rick said that he has regular customers that might be interested with this rare piece, but they would not be willing to pay $100,000 for it. Rick offered Greg $40,000 and Greg thinks that it’s a great offer, but he declined. He believes that soon he would be able to find a buyer who would gladly take it for the amount that he was asking for.
