Harry Kane was due for further assessments on his injured ankle on Wednesday with Tottenham fearing he will be absent for at least a month.
The forward was unable to undergo a scan on the problem on Monday or Tuesday as the ankle was too swollen but he was scheduled to see a specialist on Wednesday for a possible prognosis.
Initial indications were that the problem was similar to the one Kane suffered last season, when he damaged ligaments against Sunderland in September 2016 and missed 10 games in a six-week period. That would keep the 24-year-old out of action for the rest of this month and the remainder of next.
At this stage there is no timescale on how quickly Kane might recover as there are many factors to consider, such as previous damage to the ankle.
But the matter is of huge concern to Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and his England counterpart Gareth Southgate, with the World Cup only three months away.
