Annapolis Boat Shows officials say attendance up at spring sailboat event

Capital Gazette

Attendance for the fifth annual Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show grew 12 percent over last year, with record setting ticket sales days Friday and Saturday, show organizers said Wednesday.

Paul Jacobs, owner of Annapolis Boat Shows, said in a prepared statement that the growth of the spring show, held last weekend at City Dock, revolves around the number of brokers and other vendors who particpated, as well as new entertainment and workshops.

Annapolis Boat Shows said its First Sail Workshop registered 192 people for a short classroom orientation and an hour-and-a-half on-board sailing introduction. Cruisers University, in its new location in the Naval Academy Club at the United States Naval Academy, registered more than 150 boaters.

The shows did not release ticket sales numbers, but said Friday sales were up 30 percent over 2016, while Saturday rose 19 percent.

The increase in ticket sales is likely to mean increased revenue for Annapolis. Under the lease for using City Dock, Annapolis Boat Shows will pay the city 40 percent of ticket revenue after Maryland taxes. That's up 5 percent from last year.

Exact figures won't be available until May, but last year Jacobs paid the city $20,878 for its share of ticket revenues.

"Over the past 46 years we have paid the City of Annapolis more than $20 million in exchange for the use of Ego Alley and City Dock," Jacobs wrote in an email. "Not only do these shows provide one of the most significant economic engines for the maritime industry, but creates an economic impact of over $112 million in our region."

This year's show featured a floating dock marina that provided space for more than 50 boats.

Next year's spring sailboat show will take place April 20-22. The U.S. Sailboat and Powerboat Shows returns to City Dock in September and October.
