Fairchild Wheeler golf course to reopen Thursday

BRIDGEPORT — The city-owned, Fairfield-based Fairchild Wheeler course is set to re-open for play Thursday after closing March 16.
“This is not golf a la the past,” Mayor Joe Ganim emphasized Tuesday during his daily Facebook address on the pandemic, adding: “Getting it going during the week gives us a time to kind of shake out what might be a busier weekend.”
He said while re-opening the course was being done to give people the opportunity to get outside, there was a practical reason as well — “To be blunt it gives the city desperately needed revenue.”
Typically the course, open year round pending weather, makes around $1.5 million annually, with a slight profit versus expenses. The city has estimated that the two-month closure resulted in a $200,000 to $250,000 loss of revenue, though some of that was offset by the related drop in expenses.
