Against the prospect of as many as 200,000 Instacart shoppers nationally walking off the job Monday, the grocery delivery service announced enhanced benefits including enhanced sick pay, tip settings that default to whatever amount the customer paid before, and increased distribution of hand sanitizer for its shoppers.
Instacart deliveries were continuing Monday morning in Connecticut, with Instacart not responding immediately to a query on its negotiations with a group of advocates that is pressuring the company to improve pay and safety measures for workers.
Several Connecticut grocery chains offer Instacart delivery of groceries, including Aldi, Big Y, BJ’s, Costco, Stew Leonard’s, and ShopRite and sister chain Price Rite. CVS Pharmacy and Petco offer Instacart delivery service as well.
“We are immensely grateful to the entire shopper community for continually stepping up as household heroes for families who are relying on Instacart now more than ever,” the company stated in a Sunday update on its policy revisions. “We are continuing to monitor this situation and working around the clock to make sure we’re providing you with the resources and support you need.”
Stop & Shop, the largest chain in Connecticut with more than 90 locations, has long provided grocery deliveries through fellow Peapod, a fellow subsidiary of Ahold Delhaize.
“Over the past few weeks we’ve had unprecedented demand on our Stop & Shop [home delivery] services due to many customers not wanting to leave their homes,” stated Stop & Shop spokesperson Maura O’Brien in response to a query on Monday. “Some areas are experiencing higher than normal delivery wait times ... due to extremely high demand, and our teams are working incredibly hard to ensure our home delivery systems are running smoothly so that you can continue to receive orders when you need them.”
