Dock Street South is twice the size of the brewery’s West Philly location

Long-running West Philly-based brewery Dock Street is about to open its second location, this one in Point Breeze at 2118 Washington Avenue. The new space, which includes a restaurant serving beer and food, is double the size of the original. It’s slated to open early August.

At more than 10,000 square feet, Dock Street South is big enough to nearly quadruple the current brewing capacity, Dock Street says. The brewery also plans to host comedy shows, private events, and tours.

First opened in 1985 at 18th and Cherry streets, Dock Street calls itself Philly’s first microbrewery and one of the first post-prohibition craft breweries in the country. Twenty years later, it relocated to a former firehouse at 50th and Baltimore, where it became known not just for the beers but also as one of the few spots in the neighborhood for good pizza. (The brewery was never on Dock Street — it’s named after the waterfront area where a ton of beer was made in the 1700s.)

In 2017, Dock Street opened a cannery and tasting room next door to the firehouse in a converted garage. And then, last summer, it announced that the Washington Avenue location was in the works, on an industrial stretch that doesn’t have much else in the way of food and drink. Café Ynez is close by, and Chick’s is a couple blocks away.

The opening date is under wraps for now, but look for it to be within the next couple weeks.
