Marlins call up RHP Jordan Yamamoto

The “throw-in” piece acquired in the Christian Yelich deal will join the team in Miami on Wednesday.

Right-hander Jordan Yamamoto confirmed to Fish Stripes on Tuesday that he is being called up by the Marlins. This will be the 23-year-old’s first stint in the major leagues.

Yamamoto has spent the 2019 season in Double-A Jacksonville with solid results: 3.58 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 64 K in 65.1 IP. Overall, he owns a 2.69 earned run average in 134 regular season innings since joining the Marlins organization in the Christian Yelich trade.

Already on the 40-man roster, there will need to be a corresponding move to fit him on Miami’s active roster. Tuesday’s starter Elieser Hernandez and left-hander Jarlin Garcia are among the candidates you could be optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Wednesday.

Yamamoto succeeds despite below-average fastball velocity (sitting 88-92 mph) thanks to a big breaking curveball, nasty changeup and sharp command. The Hawaii native was a guest on the Fish Stripes podcast last month, where he discussed life on and off the field.

MLB Pipeline currently ranks Yamamoto as Miami’s No. 17 overall prospect.
