CIA treasure hunters are closing in on drug baron Pablo Escobar's missing £50bn fortune after finding one of his smuggling subs.

Huge quantities of the drug were smuggled from Colombia to Puerto Rico underwater before they were transported to Miami in speedboats.

Now one of Escobar's subs has been found and former divers from the US "spy" agency have been sent to explore the secret site in the hunt for the billions.

In their quest to find the site ex CIA agents Doug Laux and Ben Smith even spoke with the men and women who used to load the coke onto the vessels.

Escobar used the subs - which could carry 2,000kg of cocaine - to expand his smuggling operations and help him get away more easily from law enforcement.

A large metal box found during the dive - it did not contain anything of value

In the Discovery TV show "Finding Escobar's Millions" Laux and Smith lead a team to Colombia on a mission to uncover hidden cash, gold, guns and jewels.

"My job in the agency was finding people - finding bad guys," said Laux.

"So, you have kind of that same scenario here, if it's anything that somebody wants to keep a secret, and they keep in the dark, that's kind of where Ben and I thrive at getting in there and shining some light on it."

And after one of the local men took the agents to the site where the sub would surface they sent divers into the waters to see what they could find.

The video "Diving For The Wreck of Escobar's Submarine" - uploaded to Discovery UK on YouTube - shows the men being taken in a boat to the location.

They believed the site had been down there for decades but had only recently been uncovered by a storm which shifted the sand on the seabed.

Using underwater cameras the divers find lots of metal and a box but not the treasures they were looking for.

However they still see the find as big clue in their hunt to finally tracking down the drug baron's booty.

It's believed Escobar hid his incredible fortune across Colombia before he was killed.
