Sources: Vikings close to finalizing lucrative extension for CB Xavier Rhodes

INFORUM

One source anticipates the extension to be in the range of $70 million over five years. That would put Rhodes under contract through 2022.

Rhodes is under contract for $8.026 million for 2017.

The Vikings on Wednesday signed defensive end Everson Griffen to a four-year, $57.9 million extension. Sources said the Vikings want to lock up key defensive players for the long term and are talking about extensions for tackle Linval Joseph and linebacker Anthony Barr, and have interest in extending linebacker Eric Kendricks when he is eligible after the season.

Rhodes made the Pro Bowl last season for the first time. An average salary of $14 million per season would rank him around third among highest-paid NFL cornerbacks.

Sherels Double duty?

If called, Marcus Sherels is ready for double duty.

Sherels was second in the NFL last season with a punt-return average of 13.9 yards. He is a candidate to also return kickoffs as the Vikings seek a replacement for the departed Cordarrelle Patterson.

Sherels missed five games last season because of injuries and he's just 5 feet 10, 175 pounds. However, he scoffed at the notion he's not durable enough to handle both roles.

"You can't really think about that,'' Sherels said at training camp. "It's the NFL. Everybody takes hits. You just got to go out there and be ready to go.''

Sherels, entering his eighth Minnesota season, has seen some double duty before. In 2011, he returned 33 punts and 16 kickoffs and in 2012 brought back 32 punts and 16 kickoffs.

"If it makes the team better and they need me, then of course,'' Sherels said of wanting to also return kickoffs. "There's a lot of us competing right now. I just try to do my best and try to help the team in any way possible.''

Line concerns Zimmer

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer didn't deny having tackle Riley Reiff get hurt on the first day of camp hardly was ideal.

Reiff, who signed a five-year, $58.75 million contract last March as a free agent, suffered an undisclosed injury Thursday. He sat out Friday and again Saturday.

Zimmer has called Reiff's injury not serious. Still, it comes after the Vikings were devastated by injuries last year on the offensive line.

"We don't want to start the same thing that happened last year,'' Zimmer said. "We want to try to get through 16 games with these guys, but it's concerning. You don't want to get anybody hurt the first day.''

Reilly declined comment on his injury. Rashod Hill again took his spot with the first team at left tackle Saturday, when the Vikings were in pads for the first time.

"It sucks that (Reilly is) not out there,'' said right tackle Mike Remmers. "I know he wants to be out there right now... It's unfortunate, but I'm sure he'll get back soon.''

Also sitting out practice were running back Jerick McKinnon, who has a right leg injury that doesn't appear serious, and linebacker Kentrell Brothers, who suffered an apparent left hamstring injury Friday. Zimmer said Brothers' injury isn't serious.

Sankey signed

A day after Brothers was injured, the Vikings signed linebacker Darnell Sankey.

Brothers did not participate in Saturday's walkthrough, but wasn't on crutches while watching. Zimmer said he does not believe Brothers' injury is serious.

Sankey's cousin, Bishop Sankey, is a Vikings running back.
