Archaeologists have found part of the ancient city of the Roman Empire under the French city of Vienne, France Info reports.

The city, found in the village of St. Colombes, was called "the small Vienne Pompeii". Scientists have found the remains of mansions and public buildings, which are well preserved. People who lived there left the area during a fire, leaving their belongings.

Excavations in St. Columba, in which 20 specialists took part, began in April last year and were to continue until mid-September. But because of the discovery of the ancient Roman city, the excavations were decided to be extended until December 15.

In the excavation area, which stretches for seven thousand square meters, found the remains of a villa of the first century AD. On its walls are preserved mosaics depicting the god of wine Bacchus and satyrs, and inside the furniture that remained to stand in its place. Researchers plan to restore the house completely.

The mosaics found on the site of the ancient city will be restored and exhibited in the museum of the city of Vien in 2019. By December, archaeologists will be able to explore the lower parts of the ancient city and hope to find unique ancient exhibits on the lower levels.
