In Mexico, archaeologists discovered democratic societies of antiquity, they found out that around 1250 AD. On the hills surrounding the modern city of Tlaxcala, was the old settlement of Tlaxcallan. They talked about how in those days the initiation of a candidate for government membership took place.
The Spanish priest in the 1500s documented a similar procedure. At first, the contender for the political post was naked in the square when the crowd around roared and could even strike him. After, if he showed the necessary restraint, he got to the temple on the edge of the square, and stayed there until two years.
The priests at this time checked him for knowledge of the moral code. The candidate was starved, beaten with thorny whips, when he fell asleep, even forced to conduct rituals of bloodletting. However, after going through trials, such a person became someone more than just a warrior. He was a member of 100 or more men who took the most important military and economic decisions for the city.
Archaeologist Lan Farger noted that he would like the current politicians to prove their ability to rule the country. The researcher conducted excavations since 2007, studied the town planning plan and the material culture of the ancient settlement. Scientists believe that the old city was a model of democracy, here the rulers shared power with the commoners, collectively solving issues relating to their lives.
