COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) —

Thursday marks National French Fry Day.

According to National Day Calendar's website, the holiday is celebrated annually on July 13th.

The expression “French Fried Potatoes” first occurred in print in English in the 1856 work “Cookery for Maids of All Work” by E. Warren according to National Day Calendar.

The holiday gathering website said the term “French” was introduced to the potatoes when the American soldiers arrived in Belgium during World War I and consequently tasted Belgian fries. They said it was suggested that they called them “French” as it was the official language of the Belgian Army at that time.

You can show your love of French fries by using #NationalFrenchFryDay on social media.
