Woman says husband's gravesite neglected by maintenance at northeast El Paso cemetery

A woman said her husband's gravestone at Restlawn Memorial Park in northeast El Paso has been neglected for years.

Edith Beckage was married to her husband, Robert, for 49 years. He was buried at the cemetery after he passed away suddenly in 2003.

"We had a very beautiful marriage," Beckage said. "He died suddenly and so I wanted to make everything just so for him."

But she said the "just so" hasn't happened.

Beckage and her daughter Beverly Kelly said the area of the cemetery where Robert is buried has been neglected for the last decade.

"For the first few months, they tried to fix the sprinkler, and through the years it seemed to never really operate," Beckage said. "Because of the lack of water, everything else suffers."

Her daughter said visiting has becoming difficult, especially for Edith.

"It's real disheartening," Kelly said. "Because not only is this a place to honor my father, this is a place to honor her one day."

Kelly showed me some other gravestones in the same area that are suffering from the same problems. There are dry patches and weeds.

Several other gravestones have holes around them. KFOX14 even saw a squirrel digging a hole in the ground at some nearby gravestones while we were there.

Beckage and her daughter said they used to bring containers of water and decorations and clean up the area themselves.

"You get to the point where you've done all you can do," Beckage said. "I have a little area in my backyard that I've dedicated toward honoring my husband and I figure I've got to settle for that."

It's not just Robert's grave they're concerned about.

"This is a community issue," Kelly said. "And we're speaking, not just for our family, but for so many others who can't speak. "

KFOX14 reached out to Service Corporation International, the corporate office for Restlawn Memorial Park.

A spokesperson provided this statement:

“We are committed to providing all families with a well-maintained environment for visitation and remembrance. We are addressing the concerns our client family has brought to our attention. We value the relationships we have with our client families and encourage anyone with concerns to contact us directly.”
