President Donald Trump’s nominee for the position of CIA director, Gina Haspel, wanted to withdraw her official nomination because White House officials were worried about her involvement of terrorist suspect interrogation. This could make the Senate prevent the confirmation.

According to inside sources, Gina Haspel did discuss with White House representatives and said she wanted to step aside. The reasoning was that this would avoid a spectacle caused by a potential brutal confirmation hearing. She also wanted to avoid potential damages that could affect her reputation and that of the CIA.

Haspel was officially summoned at the White House during Friday in order to talk about the involvement she had in the controversial interrogation program the CIA had. The program in question used various techniques that were seen as being against human rights.

After the talks, Haspel went home and officials did not know if she would withdraw from the nomination or not. However, following several hours of conversations, she did decide to stick with the nomination.

President Donald Trump learned about the associated drama during Friday, as he was on a trip to Dallas. Initially, he did say he will support the decision that would be taken. Later on he decided to push for the nominee.

Gina Haspel was a deputy director of the CIA and has an agency experience of 33 years. Most of the work she did was undercover. Now she might face Congress opposition due to the interrogation program involvement, which was initially set up following the September 11 terrorism attacks.
