One of Auckland's most popular food hubs is set to more than double in size.
Construction of a 3500sqm extension of Ponsonby Central on the site of its carpark on Brown St is expected to begin in May.
Once completed the development, which was granted resource consent in 2016, will increase the size of the precinct from 2700sqm to 6200sqm.
It will include a three-storey basement carpark, one level of retail and hospitality space, one level of commercial offices, and a top-level residential penthouse.

A retail space along Brown Street and a cafe facing the Brown St Reserve is proposed to enhance the street frontage.
The new space will retain the architectural style of Ponsonby Central, which pays homage to its heritage as the former Allen's Calendar factory by using materials like old steel beams, doors and timber flooring.
Ponsonby Central property manager Daniel Beetham said there was increasing interest in the new building.
"We are getting inquiries all the time to lease the existing space in Ponsonby Central and lots people have inquired for the proposed build as well," Beetham said.
He would not say how much would be spent on the development.
Stage one will involve building the underground car park, which should be completed within 14 months, he said.
Ponsonby Business Association manager Vivienne Rosenberg said it was excited about the planned addition.
"The extension will add even more bustle and colour to our vibrant community and the plan uses detailing in line with the existing buildings which will create a wonderful feel to the whole complex," Rosenberg said.
The large underground carpark would help address a parking shortage in surrounding streets, she said.
However, there was a level of concern about the impact construction could have on retailers and residents in the area, she said.
"Ponsonby Central has worked with the council to try and mitigate these issues by targeting traffic flow, noise and working through a notified consent process."
There had been several meetings with neighbours in Brown St and Richmond Rd, with open and direct communication continuing with everyone during the construction period, she said.
A finalised construction date is yet to be announced.
