At Roche, we believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now – even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and we are fearless in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world.
That is why we come to work every single day. We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.
Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) translates exceptional science into medical innovation through a diversity of technologies and talent located across seven research sites worldwide. We deliver on individual patient needs through a deep understanding of disease biology and the implementation of Personalized Healthcare strategies.
The Clinical Pharmacology department supports the research and development of transformative therapeutics through state of the art Clinical Pharmacology approaches. This expertise allows us to characterize Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics and sources of variability in the relationships between dose, exposure and response for our drugs and thereby to guide selection of the best dose regimens.
The role of the DTA Modeling Leader is to provide state of the art disease modeling and simulation (M&S) support to the strategy and activities of the portfolio for the Neurosciences & Rare Diseases Therapeutic Area.
This is accomplished by the development of empirical and/or mechanistically-based drug disease models with formal integration of the (patho)physiology of disease, and drug target pathways. He/she in collaboration with the DTA Clinical Pharmacologist will ensure the alignment of the disease modeling portfolio with the DTA key priorities. He/she in collaboration with the DTA Clinical Pharmacologist will support the definition of the overall DTA disease modeling strategy.
Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Based on the DTA portfolio and priorities communicated by the DTA Clinical Pharmacologist , the DTA ML is accountable for the development and the maintenance of a timely, scientifically sound, innovative and business-oriented DTA disease modeling portfolio
- Accountable to support the implementation of the Disease Modeling strategy defined by the DTA MLs
- Responsible for the alignment of the disease model with the pharmacological model(s), across the DTA projects in active collaboration with the DTA CPs, CPs and PHMEs
- Provide support to Pharmacometrician (PHME) for the implementation of drug disease models across the projects within the DTA
- Ensures formal integration of the knowledge of disease mechanisms, drug target pathways, and drug properties into mathematical models with an optimal use of data, i.e. literature, competitor, preclinical and clinical (internal or external database)
- Collaborate effectively with internal modeling groups as well as external academic and commercial modeling groups
- Responsible for leveraging and building networks within and outside Roche to support DTA meaningful disease modeling activities, including relationships with key opinion leaders in disease areas and/or relevant modeling methodologies
- Identifies opportunities for utilizing the Roche Postdoctoral Fellowship program to accomplish disease modeling objectives

You own a MD, or PharmD or PhD (in natural sciences, mathematics, physical sciences or engineering) or any combination of these. At least 5 years of experience in the planning and conduct of Modeling and Simulation projects (preferably in a pharmaceutical industry setting). At least 3 years of experience in the relevant DTA setting.
Experience and/or Competencies Required
- Experienced mathematical modeler with advanced pharmacological, disease area and technical expertise
- Strong interest in developing translational drug disease models integrating, disease mechanisms, target pathways and drug candidate properties as formal mathematical concepts
- Hands on experience with M&S software, e.g. NONMEM, R, MATHLAB, Simulo, BUGS and Berkeley Madonna, etc., with specific programming skills
- Demonstrated successful leadership in a project or matrix environment, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry
- Good knowledge of the Drug Discovery and Development process.
- Effective leadership skills including mentorship, motivation, delegation and conflict management
- Highly effective team work and interpersonal skills (globally, internal and externally)
- Ability to explain complex M&S concepts and their impact on drug development program to non-modeler colleagues
