EMBL's Health and Safety Office is concerned with all work-related aspects of safety, laboratory as well as general and occupational safety, at all EMBL sites. Amongst its tasks are registration procedures, inspections of laboratories and workplaces, hazardous waste management and conducting safety training. In order to provide safe and healthy working conditions to all EMBL staff and visitors, and to support them in carrying out their duties smoothly and safely, the team sets a high value on preventive measures.
Your role
The Safety Engineer reports to the Head of Health & Safety and is responsible for the following tasks:
- Being in charge of laser safety
- Giving safety-related support as applicable, in particular to departments like e.g. the EMBL workshops and administrative units
- Monitoring safety and hygiene in the Canteen and Cafeteria
- Work place inspections
- Performing formal risk assessments of all departments in line with German labour protection laws
- Compiling and updating standard operational procedures and other health & safety documents
- Maintenance of the electronic hazardous substances register and training of new users
- Administration of the bio-archives' software, training of new users
- Support in compiling an internal e-learning system
- If required, supporting their colleagues including the handling of chemical and biological laboratory waste
- Performing other related duties as assigned
You have
Training as a safety engineer or similar, knowledge of relevant German regulations in the field of occupational safety, competent knowledge of hazardous substances, experience in accomplishing risk assessments are required. The ability to work independently and accurately is required. Very good knowledge of both English and German language, also in writing, is essential. Being fully competent in using Microsoft Office applications along with good IT knowledge relevant to database management is important.
You might also have
Qualification and experience as laser safety officer would be an advantage. Basic knowledge of food and kitchen hygiene would be beneficial.
