Get the Look: Dakota Johnson’s Style Is the Epitome of Effortless

Oye Oseni

I accidentally very purposefully watched the first Fifty Shades movie for research (editor’s note: no one asked Kelly to do this) and discovered many things about myself — like I can tolerate a shockingly high level of crazy-bad dialogue, I’m just not aroused by fancy cars, and there is such a thing as too much exaggerated lip-biting — and also that Dakota Johnson is BANG GOALS. I like her bangs better than Zooey’s (fight me) and immediately googled her in order to try and replicate her flawless hair look with some kitchen scissors (don’t worry, I stopped myself in time).

What I found, besides endless bang inspiration, is that Dakota Johnson is actually HELLA STYLISH. I would low-key wear everything she wears, and so here we are. Replicate her menswear-inspired, actually-kind-of-attainable style with the following tips.

Buy all the loafers, immediately

I’m so enamored with the way Johnson pairs loafers with literally everything — from floaty summer dresses to distressed denim. *adds every loafer in existence to cart

Anything men can do, you can do better

Everything menswear-inspired is my ultimate dream — chunky loafers, oversized blazers, schoolboy plaid, Timberlands. Johnson pulls off this look FLAW.LESS.LY. and her street style is an endless inspiration for remixing your wardrobe staples

Know what works for you, and own it

I went through a period of time where I COULD NOT STOP buying sunglasses — I had about eleventy billion pairs and everyone was like “Kelly, please calm down on the sunnies already.” Well, vindication at last — Johnson proves that sunglasses can be an integral finishing touch to any (and every) look. I love that she has a few classic “looks” she’ll go for again and again with slight variations. Great inspo for a capsule wa

Make trends your own

Though Johnson’s wardrobe is heavily neutral, I was pleasantly surprised to find how well she integrated trends — colorful stripes, leopard, 90s plaid — into her wardrobe base without losing her signature look

Dress it up with classic silhouettes

When thinking fancy thoughts, go with classic shapes and structure and then play with prints and fabrics for a look that’s always timeless — á la this French girl chic ensemble

And finally, pump your gas like a GD model

I am 100% certain I have never looked like this while pumping gas. May we all aspire to this level of breezy chic-ness.
