At the time of her arrest, police charged Basinger with manslaughter and child abuse. However, during her appearance in court, Basinger moved the court when the prosecutors recounted amidst her crying how her toddler whom she loved dearly had been found frozen outside her home when the temperatures were below freezing point while she was asleep indoors.
Basinger pleaded with the court to pardon her confessing that she was high on drugs at the time and that she had loved her son dearly and would not have voluntarily wished for anything to harm him.
She confessed to using marijuana and methamphetamine drugs before the incident that saw her blacking out, oblivious of her son's whereabouts.
According to evidence presented in court, prosecutors recounted the painful death experienced by the toddler while he attempted to get into the house as witnessed by his handprints found on the door.
Bassinger's attorney confessed to the court that Basinger showed remorse over the incident and has since mourned the death of her son and that she took full responsibility for her actions.
The Judge sentenced Basinger to 245 days in prison, which she has already served since her arrest in April. However, Basinger will serve an additional three years on probation that she will serve going forward. If Basinger violates her probation terms, she will get 19 months in prison.
