The Virginia Cavaliers stayed in pole position for the ACC Coastal crown on Saturday afternoon, getting by Georgia Tech, 33-28, behind 258 passing yards and two scores from Bryce Perkins. Also over the weekend, the men’s basketball team bested James Madison, 65-34, in their home opener for the 2019-20 season.
No. 1 women’s soccer suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling to North Carolina in the ACC championship game, 2-1. Freshman sensation Diana Ordoñez provided the Cavaliers’ only goal in the loss.
UVA will now await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament brackets, where they expect to be a top seed, on Monday afternoon.
Men’s soccer, conversely, kept their ACC title hopes alive with a 2-1 home win in the quarterfinals over Syracuse. Next up, they’ll get third-seeded Wake Forest, also to be played at Klöckner Stadium, for the right to appear in the conference tournament final.
Given football’s ongoing changes on the two sides of the ball, the team’s path to success has seemed to change of late. Or, as Bennett Conlin of the Daily Progress put it, “The script has flipped the past two weeks.”
