When Netflix’s Insatiable debuted last year on the streaming service it was met with immediate controversy.

In fact an online petition titled “CANCEL Netflix’s Body-Shaming Series ‘Insatiable'” was signed by more than 200,000 people in the aftermath of the show’s launch.

That hasn’t stopped Netflix bringing the show back for a second season though and now the next instalment has a new cast member.

Alex Landi, who plays Dr Nico Kim on Grey’s Anatomy is set to join the show in an undisclosed recurring role.

Landi is currently involved in Grey’s Anatomy first same-sex storyline between two male doctors.

Back in December, he discussed playing an Asian LGBTQ+ character, saying the role was “super special”.

“Asians are represented, I think, by less than three percent in entertainment, LGBTQ being less than 1 percent, so for them to combine both of those categories into one role is super special, and I’m so happy that I can take that on,” he told Gay Times.

“I just hope I do it right,” Landi continued. “I just hope the way I do it is accepted by everyone.

“I want to take these two categories and make everyone look strong. I want to get rid of that stereotype and give them a different look on the LGBTQ community. I just hope I’m making everyone proud.”

Debby Ryan, who plays Patty on Insatiable, recently spoke out against the backlash the show faced.

“As someone who cares deeply about the way our bodies, especially women’s, are shamed and policed in society, I was so excited to work on Insatiable because it’s a show that addresses and confronts those ideas through satire,” she wrote.

“Satire is a way to poke fun at the hardest things, bring darkness into the light, and enter difficult conversations.”

Debby continued: “I have to laugh at my pain, otherwise I’ll dissolve and weep and get stuck instead of working through it. It’s a coping mechanism and, for a lot of people who are telling these stories, a healing mechanism.

“Over the last few days I’ve seen how many voices are protective and fiercely outspoken about the themes that come into play in this story. I’m grateful for that, and comforted by it, because I want those stories told right too.”
