Another day, another grim look at the real-life horror of the world through the lens of a Netflix camera. The streaming giant is once again gifting us with a gruesome true crime docuseries. This time, we’re looking at the unresolved murder of the Alcàsser Girls with the imaginatively named The Alcàsser Murders.
Back in 1992, Miriam García Iborra, Antonia “Toñi” Gómez Rodríguez, and Desirée Hernández Folch were hitchhiking to a club in Valencia, Spain. The trio were dropped off at by a couple and then picked up in another car, however, this is the last time the teenagers would be seen alive.
The case caught headlines all those years ago due to the brutality of the murders, but also criticism of how the Spanish police handled the evidence. The girls vanished in the November on 1992 but weren’t found until January 1993.
No one was ever convicted of the murders, although Antonio Anglés Martins was strongly linked to the case. While Martins was never charged, his brother’s name was found on a note near the bodies.
Speaking about The Alcàsser Murders, executive producer Ramón Campos said: “Our intention is that this will be the ultimate documentary about one of the cases that shocked Spanish society for years.
“We will tell the stories of all people involved in an effort to try and clarify once and for all the truth of what happened that dreadful November 1992 in Alcàsser. We will offer everyone the opportunity to share their truth.”
The Alcàsser Murders joins a trio of true crime stories to give you nightmares. Already available to stream is Killer Ratings. The series revolved around a TV celebrity, murder, political power, and a criminal empire. It tells the true-life story of a Brazilian TV host who who was accused of literally killing for ratings and using his show to cover up the truth.
Finally, Exhibit A is about to drop on June 28. This true crime series shows how innocent people have been convicted with dubious forensic techniques and tools such as touch DNA and cadaver dogs.
Meanwhile we’re all eagerly awaiting a third instalment of Making a Murderer – which sounds like it could happen at some point.
Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos recently sat down with Cosmopolitan UK to discuss their creation which has captured worldwide attention.
And it seems like there’s plenty more to tell yet, as the pair touched on the likelihood of a third season. “Maybe [there could be a third season]… I heard that documentaries [don’t come in threes] come in tens!”.
There’s no indication as to how long a third season may take, given the three year gap in between the first two it’s likely to be another lengthy wait.
Hoping to follow in the footsteps of Making a Murderer, The Alcàsser Murders is a four-part series that’s sure to blow us all away.
