Peaky Blinders will surely go down as one of the biggest and most successful shows in recent memory, with the gritty crime drama proving a wild success for the BBC.
Thankfully we already know we’re likely to get another couple of series before the Shelby family calls it a day – though that hasn’t stopped the show’s creator looking ahead to the finale.
Unusually, Steven Knight seemed keen to give away details way in advance on what the future holds for Tommy Shelby, suggesting a happy-ish ending could be in store.
“[Series seven] will tell a different story, where Tommy Shelby – who begins as this nihilistic, looking-out only for his family person – will be redeemed, and he will become good,” Steven Knight said at the Canneseries TV drama festival (via Variety).
“I want to take him on that journey from the person we saw [in series one], to the person he will become in 1939.”
Whatever Tommy’s fate, we’ve already been assured that the upcoming fifth season will be the best yet.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Knight said: “We just finished shooting a week and a half ago. Series five is done. I can honestly say that it’s the best yet. It’s really good. It’s fantastic and it all fell together beautifully. Great performances and I think audiences are going to be on the edge of their seats.”
Season five will see the Shelby family dealing with the 1930s following the financial crash of 1929 with Tommy’s new political position coming into play.
Steven added: “The story of the Peaky Blinders and of the Shelby family gets woven into the political fabric of Britain and Europe as the 1920s end and the 30s begin.
“Tommy Shelby faces the darkest force he has ever faced and his struggle is as relevant today as it was then.”
He also reaffirmed that the show will “almost certainly” be a total of seven seasons.
