Since Peaky Blinders first exploded onto our screens back in 2013 it’s built a wildly loyal audience and earned shedloads of critical acclaim, all of it fully deserved too.
One thing it hasn’t done, is remained PG. Sounds like that’s not going to be changing with this series either, which is apparently going to be the most violent to date.
Helen McCrory, who plays Aunt Polly in the series, said that even she found the upcoming episodes “disgustingly violent.”
“I’ve only seen episode one, and there’s a whole bit… We saw the screening in Birmingham, for fans who managed to get lottery tickets,”she said.
“I look away from the screen. I, as Helen, can’t watch it. I think it’s disgusting, gratuitous violence. It is… no, not gratuitous – disgustingly violent.”
“But it is. And it should be,” she continued.
“I think it’s much more disturbing than somebody slashes somebody’s face or somebody shoots somebody and it’s all just the end of it.”
Speaking to The Metro, McCrory admitted that she had a fleeting thought about quitting the show but decided against it.
“I have had a weekend of considering just this, with a wonderful, wonderful offer of another thing, with someone I think is one of the most talented people.
“I said no, and came back to this, because I feel it’s given me so much, and I think that you behave well in some things and see it through to the end if somebody wants you to.”
“You don’t just go ‘thank you’ [and leave],” she added.
“Also I want to see it through to the end.”
Speaking about the upcoming season, the show’s creator described it as the best yet.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Steven Knight said: “We just finished shooting a week and a half ago. Series five is done. I can honestly say that it’s the best yet. It’s really good. It’s fantastic and it all fell together beautifully. Great performances and I think audiences are going to be on the edge of their seats.”
