The rumours mill is heading into overdrive as it looks like the Marvel Cinematic Universe is officially trying to cast Keanu Reeves.
The world’s highest-grossing franchise was once held up by the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and co, but as the MCU continues to expand, Disney is adding even more famous faces.
In the past, big names like Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Tom Hiddleston, and Zoe Saldana have all suited up in the MCU, and it seems the series has a knack for snaring A-list talent.
After the runaway success of the John Wick movies, Reeves is back at the top of his game and one of Tinseltown’s hottest commodities right now.
Reports of his possible involvement in the MCU have been swirling for what seems like an age, but now, franchise overseer Kevin Feige has put the wheels in motion. Speaking to ComicBook.com at a press junket for Spider-Man: Far From Home, Feige was grilled about Reeves’ potential.
“We talk to him for almost every film we make,” laughed Feige. “We talk to Keanu Reeves about. I don’t know when, if, or ever he’ll join the MCU, but we very much want to figure out the right way to do it.”
So, it sounds like it’s a case of when and not if we’ll see the ageless actor join the rest of the MCU alumni. It’s great news and will undoubtedly lead to frantic fan casting on who Reeves could play — Adam Warlock anyone?
He’s also popped up in several conversations about playing Wolverine, even throwing his hat into the ring and saying he’d love to play the marvellous mutant.
Of course, Reeves’ crazy schedule could make things a little complicated. Following the box office behemoth that was John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, a fourth movie has already been greenlit. Elsewhere, Reeves is reprising his legendary role as Bill Preston Esq. for 2020’s Bill & Ted Face the Music.
Adding someone with the star power of Reeves to the MCU is no small task. Given how long Feige has clearly been touting him, it would seem a shame to waste him as a one-shot villain resigned to a single movie.
If he is going join forces with the rest of the spandex-clad supes, it makes sense that Reeves is giving an ongoing part that can evolve (as either a hero or villain) as we move into Phase 4 and beyond.
Ultimately, it all a pipe dream for now, but at least we know where we stand. ‘Keanu’ believe it?
