Sorry Meredith, it looks like you could be flatlining in the binge stakes as Channel 4 brings all 15 seasons of ER to its All 4 app and gives Grey’s Anatomy a run for its money.
Long before we were heading through the blood-stained halls of the Grey Sloan (formerly Seattle Grace) Memorial Hospital, George Clooney was having us swoon as Dr. Doug Ross. Premiering on September 19, 1994, ER ran for a whopping 15 seasons and 331 episodes.
Starring the likes of Clooney, Julianna Margulies, Alex Kingston, John Stamos, and Angela Bassett, ER‘s incredible roster of guest stars included everyone from Shameless‘ William H. Macy to Ving Rhames, Sex and the City‘s Kristin Davis to Lucy Liu.
The groundbreaking medical drama is finally able to stream in the UK ahead of its 25th anniversary. Set in the emergency room of a busy Chicago hospital, ER was created by Jurassic Park writer Michael Crichton. Crichton himself was a doctor and put his medical knowledge to good use with ER.
ER was a pioneering piece of television and notably opened the door to Clooney’s Hollywood fame. Season 1 also featured an episode directed by a much younger Quentin Tarantino. Considering Channel 4 was the original home of ER when it aired, there’s a sense of justice that the medical marvel returns home.
Charlie Palmer, Managing Editor for All 4, said: ”We’re delighted to be bringing ER home to 4. One of the TV greats, the series remains every bit as impactful in the era of binge-viewing”.
Season 1 lands on September 19, followed by a new season every Friday. Yes, we all love Grey’s Anatomy, but it’s doubtful we’d ever have seen the likes of McDreamy is ER hadn’t been such a hit. In fact, ER is just behind Grey’s as the second longest-running primetime medical drama in American television history.
As well as netting an unheard of 124 Emmy nominations and winning Golden Globes, GLAAD Awards, and People’s Choice Awards, ER has earned a whopping $3 billion in TV revenue (as of 2014).
When you’ve finished binging Grey’s on Amazon Prime, why not give ER a go? So, scrub in and get ready to relive the death and disasters, love and loss all over again when ER returns to our screens.
