A double decker and more Hamilton-Pukekohe services are among bus changes for north Waikato.

They take effect on Tuesday and are a "vast improvement", Waikato district and regional councils say.

The Hamilton to Pukekohe service will move from once a fortnight to every weekday, and a bus will travel from Te Kauwhata to Hamilton - and back - each weekday.

New services will help people who can't drive and need to get to "essential health and other services", Waikato Regional Council public transport manager Andrew Wilson said in a statement (file photo).

A double decker will be used for the newly-combined Huntly Assist and Horotiu Assist services, and the Huntly internal service will now run on Tuesdays and Thursdays, three times a day.

The new services are a "vast improvement" on what north Waikato had available before, Waikato District Council strategic projects manager Vishal Ramduny said in a statement.

Waikato Regional Council was also involved.

"For people unable to drive, in particular, these changes are going to make a massive difference to their ability to access essential health and other services," public transport manager Andrew Wilson said in a statement.

To check timetables, visit the Busit website, or ring the 24-hour bus infoline on 0800 205 305.

The bus services are funded through fares, a NZ Transport Agency subsidy and Waikato District Council rates.
