A funeral home that has been operating since the 1930s is now donating all its profits back into the local community.

Stuart Houchen, who owned Cambridge Funerals for over 10 years, sold it to the Legacy Trust in August 2018.

The trust was founded by Greg Brownless, a former funeral home owner in Tauranga

The Legacy Trust was Brownlee's way of gifting his Woodhill Funeral Home business back to the Tauranga community.

Cambridge Funerals is the first business to have been bought by the Legacy Trust outside the Bay of Plenty.

"When I sold, I had several offers to buy the business," Houchen said.

"Legacy were first equal with another private owner, but I love the way Legacy works, and I thought as soon as it came on board, that's the way it should be.

"That's why I chose them as the buyer. I think it'll be good for the community."

The Legacy Trust has donated $3 million into the Bay of Plenty since it was founded in 2007.

New manager of Cambridge Funerals, Jono Gibson, emphasised the advantages the Legacy Trust will bring to worthy causes in the Cambridge community.

"It's important to know all the profits from Cambridge Funerals will be going into Cambridge. It's separate to the Tauranga part," Gibson said.

"The better this company's doing, the more money gets donated back into the community, which I think's really cool."

Houchen said he hoped people will continue giving custom to Cambridge Funerals heading into the future, with the knowledge that profits would be contributed to local causes.

It is expected that Legacy will look to cycle through the charities of Cambridge, giving a few large donations in each round rather than a lot of small ones.

The latest donation is to Cambridge Primary School, to help them put on their next school gala.

Houchen is confident that he's leaving the business in good hands, while also allowing it to be more connected to Cambridge than ever before.

"Obviously I guess when times do get tough in the national economy, that becomes more pertinent. The money from the funeral home is going to charities within society."
