Former Black Caps allrounder James Franklin is set to be named coach of Durham in English county cricket.

ESPN Cricinfo report that Franklin will take charge of Durham's championship and one-day teams.

The 38-year-old is currently helping his former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori coach the Brisbane Heat in Australia's Big Bash League.

Franklin has vast experience in the English scene, having played for Essex, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Nottinghamshire and Middlesex where he played the final match of his three-year stint last August. He captained Middlesex to the 2016 championship title.

Durham operate in the second division but are a proud club with three county titles and two one-day championships.

They have also been a popular destination for New Zealand players over the years with Tom Latham, Nathan Astle, Scott Styris, Paul Wiseman and Ross Taylor all having played there.

Franklin is set to replace long-serving head coach Jon Lewis who has left, reportedly unhappy with a coaching restructure.

Franklin is believed to be moving in on a three-year deal.

Durham are tipped to name a separate T20 coach.

Franklin, who made his name with Wellington, played 31 tests for New Zealand from 2001 to 2013, scoring 808 runs at an average of 20.71 and taking 82 wickets at 33.97.

He also played 110 one-day internationals and 38 T20 internationals during the same period.
