Kahu and Makaia Day-Brown, the only siblings in the world to be sponsored by an internationally renowned sports action company, can now both add national champion to their list of scootering achievements.

The former Timaru brothers, now based in Christchurch to extend their ramp experience on the competition park there, won their age groups at the New Zealand National Scooter Championships held in Napier at the weekend and will travel to Brisbane, Australia, in April to compete in the Australasian Championships.

Makaia, 12, competing in the 13-and-under age group of the competition, was 13 points ahead of the runner-up while Kahu, 15, competing in the 16-and-under age group was four points ahead of his opponents.

Speaking to Stuff on Sunday afternoon, their mother Rachel Day-Brown said the boys' success was well-earned and had much to do with the fact they had got their scootering basics at the Caroline Bay skatepark.

"It shows all the hard work has paid off," she said.

"They are ecstatic and relieved. Each brother is right there supporting the other when it's their turn on the park, so when it comes to podium moments it's unreal to see how excited they are for each other."

Last December the brothers achieved a global first when Kahu earned a brand sponsorship with Madd Gear, a year after Makaia did.

Now the brothers are not just the only riders in the South Island to have Madd sponsorship deals, but the only brothers in the world to be sponsored by the brand.

Their mother said the boys were now working towards their biggest goal - to turn professional in the sport.

"That's when the world will open up to them.

"They will travel and earn with their sport."

She said the family is now based in Christchurch, moving south just before Christmas.

"It's to hopefully fast track them to become pros.

"We moved as soon as school finished so the kids could practise hard for nationals and it worked."

However, the boys still put much of their success down to the many hours they have spent scootering the concrete at Caroline Bay.

"Without that[the skate park] these boys wouldn't be where they are now," she said.

She said they were grateful to their manager Ricky Malcolm as well as their sponsors.

This is the third time the boys will compete in the Australasian Scooter Championships and the first time both boys have won the title of national champions.
