Lydia Ko has made a fine start to the new LPGA Tour season, leaving her one shot off the pace after the opening round of the Tournament of Champions in Florida.

The Kiwi carded a five-under 66 at the Tranquilo Golf Course on Friday morning (NZT), good enough for a share of third with American Stacy Lewis.

Canadian Brooke Henderson and South Korean Eun-Hee Ji are joint leaders after opening the year with six-under rounds.

GETTY IMAGESLydia Ko hits his her tee shot on the fourth hole during the first round of the Tournament of Champions at Tranquilo Golf Course.

Ko, who hit all 13 fairways, and found 10 of 18 greens in regulation, rolled in six birdies on the day. Her only blemish was on the par four 16th, which she bogeyed.

The 21-year-old went out in 30 and held a one-stroke lead over Gaby Lopez, Ji and Mirim Lee heading into the back nine.

Clearly, an off-season of yoga has worked in her favour, and golf's new rules, which were implemented at the start of the month, didn't impact her.

Caddies are no longer prohibited to align their golfer. Ko has consistently used her caddies, including Johnny Scott - her latest bag carrier - to align her in the past.

The new rule states: "The previous prohibition is extended so that, once the player begins taking a stance for the stroke, and until the stroke is made, the player's caddie must not deliberately stand on or close to an extension of the line of play behind the ball for any reason.

"There is no penalty if the caddie accidentally stands on or close to an extension of the line of play behind the ball, rather than in trying to help in lining up."

The United States Golf Association said the change was made because the "ability to line up one's feet and body accurately to a target line is a fundamental skill of the game for which the player alone should be responsible".

Ko, ranked 14th in the world, admitted she spent time studying the changes, and expected rules advisors to be a lot busier in the opening stages of the 2019 season.
