A 59-year-old man who was injured in Christchurch has been transferred to Auckland after receiving severe chemical burns at a milk processing plant.

The man, who was a contractor, received severe acid burns to his leg after working on the plant's ultra-high temperature processing (UHT) filling line.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokesman said the man had been transferred to Middlemore Hospital in Auckland.

A Middlemore Hospital spokeswoman said the man was in a stable condition.

She said he was 59, not 55 as previously reported.

Westland Milk Products spokesman Steve Attwood earlier said workers helped the man by putting him under a water safety shower and giving him early medical assistance before medical teams arrived.

Westland Milk Product staff were working with WorkSafe to investigate what caused the burns.

In the meantime, the UHT filling line had been closed. The rest of the UHT area was operating as normal, Attwood said.

"He [the man] may not be a member of our staff, but we are still concerned for his safety.

"We will be investigating to see if there are lessons that can be learnt from this and to see if we can prevent this from happening to other people working on the line in future."

A WorkSafe spokeswoman confirmed they were investigating the incident.

"As the incident is under investigation I won't be able to provide any additional details at this time."

She said the investigation could take up to a year to complete.
