A fabled feline who's made a name for himself as the resident cat of an Auckland volcano is on the hunt for a new owner.

Kevin the cat has lived on Mt Eden for five years and is no stranger to tourists and locals alike, many of whom upload photos of him to Twitter.

But the cat's owner is on the move, so Kevin is looking for a new "home" – or, at least, somewhere to eat.

"We're moving to a tiny flat and it's not next to a giant natural reserve so we're trying to find someone else in Mt Eden who can feed him," Kevin's owner Kirsten said.

"They'll need to understand they won't see much of him."

Kevin was rescued from the SPCA in 2012 and spent the first years of his life next to Western Park, which he used as a base to explore central Auckland.

Since moving to Mt Eden five years ago, Kevin has been known to disappear for days at a time.

The almost-daily rescue missions began to slow down after Kirsten put a tag on the cat's collar explaining he wasn't lost, just adventurous and friendly.

In a bid to keep tabs on him, she also set up a Twitter account, A Cat Called Kevin, and etched the username next to the phone number on the tag.

It meant she got an update on his whereabouts every time a member of the public uploaded a photo.

"It's a weird way to have a relationship with a cat, via Twitter and occasionally feeding him at 2.30am in the morning, but we really love him.

"We go for walks on the mountain just to see him."

Kevin has been known to go further afield. Three years ago, he ended up in Ōtara, south Auckland, after going to Christmas in the Park by himself and then going home with a family.

"They noticed he had a tag and called me," Kirsten said.

When he isn't catching rats or getting pats from tourists, Kevin has been known to try and stand in the way of true love.

For Auckland resident Joe Taylor, bumping into the cat came as a bit of a shock.

Taylor said Kevin introduced himself while he was kissing his girlfriend for the first time in the long grasses of Mt Eden.

"I felt this thing against my back so I freaked out and jumped a bit. I turned around, and it was Kevin."

The friendly cat then tried to nuzzle between the pair, which Taylor believed was a deliberate attempt to separate them.

But it didn't work. Two years later, Taylor popped the question at the same spot and Kevin came jingling along as they made their way back down.

"We reckon he came to say hello and congrats."

People interested in adopting Kevin can contact his owner through the cat's Twitter page.

His owner believes he'd best be suited to a family that already owns a cat that "delivers on the emotional front".
