Binge-watchers, be careful what you click because there is a new Netflix scam doing the rounds.

Targeting subscribers via email, the latest phishing scam preys on user's weaknesses by alerting them their account has been "temporarily suspended".

The email prompts users to enter their personal information and "verify" their account details to release the hold on the account.

The scam claims the suspension is due to "issues in the automatic verification process" and it will only be fixed once you "verify all required informations and update your payment method".

There are telltale signs the email is fake and untrustworthy. For example, the body of the email uses the word "informations", and the email display name is titled "NETFLlX" with the 'i' replaced by a lowercase 'L'.

This type of scam isn't new, especially for big brands such as Netflix.

"Unfortunately, scams are common on the internet and target popular brands such as Netflix and other companies with large customer bases to lure users into giving out personal information," a Netflix spokesperson said.

"Whenever you receive something odd through email, your 'spidey sense' will normally warn you," says CommArc security analyst Steve Brorens.

If you are the recipient of a suspicious email from Netflix or any other company you are a customer of, it's important to take a few safety precautions.

"Confirm that the email is genuine before clicking any links, opening attachments or responding," Brorens said.

The scam was first detected in Australia on Monday, January 28. There have not yet been any reports of New Zealand customers being targeted.
