On Sunday morning, police officers pushed a car from a driveway at the Grasmere house, where a man was seriously injured on Saturday afternoon.

Several police cars and dog units went to the small town of Mataura, north of Invercargill, late on Saturday as part of the investigation.

The Armed Offenders Squad, which was sent to the Drury Ln address at about 3.30pm on Saturday, were called in "as a precaution", Harvey said.

Seven or eight police cars also attended the altercation. Both ends of the street at Heywood St and Bay Rd were cordoned off by police.

One bystander said he was with his friends when the incident happened.

"We heard a gun shot, then screaming and then the cops arrived," he said.

Another resident on the street, who did not want to be named, said they were told by neighbours a Mongrel Mob member had allegedly been "shot in the head"

The injured man was taken to Southland Hospital.
