Fire crews are monitoring Rabbit Island after a large bush fire was extinguished on Friday afternoon.

The fire started in sand dune bush at the end of Ken Beck Drive with fire crews alerted to it at midday on Friday.

Southern Communication shift manager, Andrew Norris said Appleby and Richmond fire engines attended the fire, which was on the seaward side of the road along the foreshore.

"There was a reasonably northerly wind going and the fear was, it would spread into pine trees," Norris said.

The temperature in Nelson on Friday reached 24 degrees Celsius with Rabbit Island's Fire Danger indicator pointing to 'high'.

Tankers from Brightwater, Mapua and Appleby attended the 30-metre wide and 100-metre long blaze while two local helicopters dumped water from above.

"They worked for several hours to bring it under control and extinguish the fire," Norris said.

Fire crews left at about 5pm, he added.

"Unfortunately overnight, it flared up again."

Norris said crews from Appleby, Mapua and Brightwater were back at Rabbit Island on Saturday.

Appleby Fire Station controller, Paul Eggers said the crews stayed on site until 10am before forestry crew with tankers monitored the area until 4pm.

The forestry crew go through with hand tools to dig out the hot spots.

He said the fire was deep seated with dead stumps promoting the fire to burn down into the ground which reignited over night causing it to "take off again".

Eggers said he checked the site on Saturday night and there was "nothing at all smoking there".

"I'll probably go back down this afternoon (Sunday) to check.

"It's a funny place to have it", Egger said.

It was lucky the road is 20 metres away from the beach, which contained it a bit, he said.
