The body of actor Aloysius Pang, who died in New Zealand during Singaporean military training, is understood to be on its way home.

His death is expected to force changes to the way Singapore trains its soldiers, who are conscripted to the military.

The Singapore Defence Ministry has revealed how Pang died, while on military training at Waiouru Training Camp, amid ongoing investigations into his death. Singaporean and New Zealand authorities are independently investigating what went wrong.

His abdomen and chest were crushed, when a gun barrel was lowered on a large artillery device he was helping to repair Saturday, the ministry said.

He was put on life support and survived four days after the serious incident inside a Singapore Self-Propelled Howitzer at the New Zealand-run army camp, south of Taupō.

New Zealand Police said they understood his body was ready to be sent back to Singapore, however the Singapore Armed Forces were not commenting further about the incident. His family had asked for the body to be returned home as soon as possible.

His family were flown to Hamilton, where Pang was evacuated to after the incident. Singapore also sent its own trauma surgeon to help local doctors, but despite hours of intensive surgeries he could not be saved.

Pang died at 8.45pm on Wednesday night.

His girlfriend, actor Jayley Woo, visited him in hospital. His brother also arrived in New Zealand to see his brother, but he was never able to speak with him.

In a note to her partner, Woo spoke about being in hospital to find his dead body.

"You only left me with your cold and hard hands," she said.

"You had better come back, Otherwise I won't forgive you in my life."

The pair had kept their relationship secret. The public only found out about their relationship when Woo and her twin sister Hayley posted about Pang's death. They said the relationship was going to be kept private until the pair married.

Hayley said she had talked with Pang, who had told her he planned to propose in the next three years. They were already saving for the wedding.

"Why," Woo asked on Instagram, in the hours after her partner's death. "You left me behind without mercy and let me alone.

"Love you for ever. I wish you go all the way well."

On Wednesday, the defense ministry said Pang had been put on life support following surgeries to repair his damaged organs. Pang died at Waikato Hospital later that day. He was 28.

In a briefing on Thursday, Chief of Defence Force Melvyn Ong said the Singapore Armed Forces would modify its training programs in the weeks ahead.

"This reduction of training tempo ... will be enforced for as long as it takes for us to get it right. And we want to do it right, we want to do it safe for every activity, we want to do it right every time,'' Ong said, according to The Straits Times newspaper.

Singapore mandates that young men serve in its armed forces, police force or civil defense force. Most serve full time for two years and then have annual training obligations.

Pang had completed his full-time service, and was an armament technician whose rank was corporal first class.

His elder brother Kenny said he didn't manage to speak to Pang.

"He's the precious of our family. He's the youngest. He's the most loved,'' he said upon returning to Singapore on Thursday. "To reciprocate that ... he has also given us all the support and all the love he can.''

Funeral arrangements were being made.

Before leaving for New Zealand, Pang wrote on Twitter that "Unfortunately, my 2019 will start off with me flying to New Zealand for 3 weeks due to reservist. I'll be back in action soon.''

The military said it would convene an independent committee to investigate the circumstances leading to Pang's injury.

He had been working on a Singapore Self-Propelled Howitzer, a motorised piece of artillery that looks similar to a small tank. The live-firing training exercise, hosted by New Zealand's military each year, took place at Waiouru.

Also known as Pang Wei Chong, the actor appeared in the movie Young & Fabulous as well as television series including The Truth Seekers and C.L.I.F.
