A kitten found roaming the greens and fairways on a South Taranaki golf course is after a new life in a forever home.

The nine week old tabby female cat, who was only given the name Trixie this morning, was found at Te Ngutu Golf Course in Normanby at the beginning of February and is one of 14 kittens and two adult cats available for adoption at the SPCA Centre in Hāwera.

Centre Manager Katrina Bowditch said the kitten approached a lady playing golf who said it was alone and really hungry.

"The kitten just ran out and found her, so she bought her in here and as yet nobody has claimed her," Bowditch said.

Trixie was now desexed, microchipped and vaccinated and ready to settle in with a new family.

"She's a very friendly cat and has a cute round face," Bowditch said.

"She loves to play and has a lovely personality and loves a cuddle."

Trixie is one of the 41,00 animals the SPCA helps protect every year and they were also on the lookout for volunteers across New Zealand to help collect funds for their annual appeal starting next month.

Volunteers were being asked to give up two hours of their time on March 4-10 to raise funds for sick, abandoned, abused and neglected animals across the country.

"We want people to give just a couple of hours to help out, it would be really awesome." Bowditch said.

Volunteers can register at: www.spca.nz/appealcollector or to adopt a cat like Trixie, the Hāwera SPCA is open from 9.30 - 2.30 weekdays or 9.30 - 1.30 Saturday's or call 06 2785605.
