ALBANY — Fort Drum’s commander, Maj. Gen. Jeffrey L. Bannister, spoke to lawmakers about support for the post and local development efforts during an appearance in Albany on Monday.

The visit included meetings with Senate and Assembly officials, along with aides to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

Among the points discussed were new funding for the Army Compatible Use Buffer Program, which protects training from encroachment by buying landowner development rights, and funding for Route 26 improvements.

“His visit is representative of the ongoing effort to raise awareness in Albany about the critical role Fort Drum and its troops play in our nation’s defense and our state’s economy,” said state Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, in a statement. The appearance of a top commander has become a centerpiece of the legislature’s “10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum Day,” which was created by Sen. Ritchie.
