High school roundup: Bowen helps Carthage stop Watertown for baseball victory

CARTHAGE — Freshman Ben Bowen singled three times and drove in two runs as the Carthage baseball team upended Watertown, 6-3, in a Frontier League “A” Division game on Tuesday.

Garrett Thomas added three hits and Tyler Hike picked up a complete-game victory for the Comets (9-7 overall, 4-4 league).

Ryan Peters went 2-for-4 and pitched a complete game for the Cyclones (10-7, 4-3).

GENERAL BROWN 9-7, INDIAN RIVER 0-1

Alex Shanahan totaled five hits and three RBIs over two games as the Lions swept a doubleheader with the Warriors in Dexter.

Jasper Russell tossed a five-hit shutout in the opening game for General Brown (6-6, 4-5).

Carson McConnell registered three hits in game two for Indian River (0-11, 0-9).

BEAVER RIVER 4, SOUTH LEWIS 3

Collin Noftsier knocked in two runs as the Beavers gained a “C” Division victory over the Falcons at Turin.

Dawson Schnieder went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Beaver River (10-6, 8-5).

Gene Baily laced a two-run single in the fourth for South Lewis (8-4).

LAFARGEVILLE 13, ALEXANDRIA 3

Tanner Jeffers went 3-for-4 and plated three RBIs as the Red Knights wrapped up the regular season with a “D” Division victory over the Purple Ghosts (3-11, 2-11) in Alexandria Bay.

Owen Parliament ripped a two-run triple and Tim Filiatrault drove in two runs on two hits and earned the win on the mound for LaFargeville (12-2).

SANDY CREEK 3, LYME 2 (10)

Dakota Loomis singled in the 10th inning to score Dylan Kimball for the game-winning run and send the Comets to a walk-off win over the Indians (5-9, 5-8) in a league crossover game.

Dakota Loomis struck out 11 and allowed two runs in six-plus innings, and Kaleb Brown entered with one out in the sixth and didn’t allow a hit while recording the victory for Sandy Creek (6-8, 5-8). Loomis also doubled twice and drove in the game-tying run for the Comets.

SOFTBALL

CARTHAGE 11, WATERTOWN 9 (8)

Alana Martin singled in two runs in the top of the eighth inning to cap off a comeback from a 9-6 deficit entering the seventh for the Comets in an extra-inning “A” Division victory over the host Cyclones.

Martin finished 2-for-5 and pitched a complete game, and Naomi Moran went 3-for-5 with a triple and five RBIs for Carthage (2-9, 2-6).

Kailei Saunders tripled and singled for Watertown (1-10, 0-8).

GENERAL BROWN 16, INDIAN RIVER 1 (5)

Senior Hannah McManaman went 3-for-3 with a triple, a double, and four runs batted in to help the Lions beat the Warriors in a crossover game on senior night.

Chelsea VanTassel struck out eight and surrendered two hits, and Marissa Valvo finished 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for General Brown (9-5, 7-3).

Indian River (5-7, 4-5) finished their regular season tied for first place in the “A” Division with Immaculate Heart.

BEAVER RIVER 10, SOUTH LEWIS 4

Karissa Gerdon went 2-for-5 with two doubles and five RBIs, including a bases-clearing double with two outs in the fifth inning, to lead the Beavers to a “C” Division victory over the Falcons in Turin.

Emily Beck went 3-for-4 on three singles with an RBI, and Kirsten Joslin pitched a complete game for Beaver River (6-7, 4-6).

Drianna Crofoot went 3-for-3 with a double for South Lewis (6-7, 3-6).

LAFARGEVILLE 17, ALEXANDRIA 0 (5)

Sarah Johnson pitched a two-hit shutout and went 3-for-3 with a double and five RBIs to lead the Red Knights to a “D” Division victory over the Purple Ghosts (3-7) at LaFargeville.

Isabella Soluri drove in four runs during a 3-for-4 performance, and Kamryn Barnes finished 2-for-2 with an RBI for LaFargeville (10-3, 8-2).

The teams will play again at 4 p.m. Friday in LaFargeville in the league playoff semifinals.

SOUTH JEFFERSON 2, WESTHILL 0

Alexys Gayne struck out nine during a three-hit shutout and scored on a suicide squeeze bunt from Sara Busler to lead the Spartans to a nonleague victory over the Warriors (8-8) in Adams Center.

Samantha Dibble tallied two hits for South Jefferson (11-3), which will host Sandy Creek today in a matchup of Frontier League division leaders.

BOYS LACROSSE

LOWVILLE 20, IHC 2

Devin Babcock scored seven goals and Chad Bach tallied eight assists to lead the Red Raiders to a victory over the Cavaliers in the Frontier League third-place playoff game at Lowville.

Drew Turck added three goals and an assist, and Andre Young made five saves for Lowville (8-8).

Matt Murrock and Andrew Ranger scored for Immaculate Heart (2-12).

GIRLS LACROSSE

CARTHAGE 18, INDIAN RIVER 5

Braelie Kempney scored four goals and added five assists to carry the Comets to a Frontier League “A” Division victory over the Warriors in Carthage.

Morgan Paige and Claire Odett scored four goals apiece for Carthage (8-8, 4-4). Paige also tallied three assists.

Courtney Trudeau paced Indian River (4-11, 1-7) with one goal and one assist.

IHC 15, MASSENA 11

Julia O’Brien produced eight points, including six assists, as the host Cavaliers ended the regular season win over the Red Raiders.

Kate O’Neill totaled five goals and Amanda McElhern notched four goals and three assists for Immaculate Heart Central (6-10).

Abigail Johnson paced Massena (9-5) with four goals.
