LE RAY — A least one person was injured in a vehicle rollover accident after an SUV hit a pedestrian and swerved off State Route 283 in the town of LeRay Friday.

Fort Drum soldier Jason Blevins, who witnessed the incident, said a teenage girl was trying to cross the road when a northbound SUV unsuccessfully attempted to swerve out of the way. The SUV struck the girl and rolled before coming to rest upside down in a ditch beside the road.

The vehicle had three occupants, all of whom Mr. Blevins said did not appear to be injured.

Mr. Blevins, who was traveling in the opposite direction, stopped and exited his vehicle to check on the girl.

“I ran up to her, checked her pulse,” he said. “She had shallow breaths, really week pulse. Then she started groaning and opened her eyes.”

He said emergency services crews arrived at the scene about five minutes later. A helicopter later airlifted the girl from the scene around 4:30 p.m.

Police at the scene said they are still investigating the accident.
