Watertown High School student to participate in national SkillsUSA competition

WATERTOWN — Watertown City School District senior Tyler Newman is advancing to the national SkillsUSA technical education competition in Louisville, Ky.

He won first place in his respective skill set competition in Syracuse last month, and will be competing with other technical education students at Louisville’s Crowne Plaza Hotel from June 19 to 24.

He participates in the plumbing and HVAC program at the Bohlen Technical Center, and was a gold medalist in the plumbing installation and repair contest. He was the only student from Bohlen Tech to win gold.

Three teams of students from the Howard G. Sackett Technical Center in Glenfield won gold in community service related projects, along with one individual cosmetology student who claimed gold in her field.

SkillsUSA, which hosts the national technical education competition, is a national membership organization which helps students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.

The organization has chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
