— Two people were arrested Monday after they were found with 694 bricks of heroin during a traffic stop in Halifax County.

In March 2016, the Tar River Regional Drug Task Force began an investigation into the trafficking of heroin in Nash County. Authorities determined that the heroin was originating from Scotland Neck and then being distributed to Halifax, Edgecombe and Nash Counties.

During a traffic stop early Monday morning, Tony Reams and Herbert Lamont Cherry were found to be in possession of 3,460 grams of heroin with an estimated street value of about $347,000.

“It’s a good day when you look at the amount of drugs seized and the traffickers arrested before their poison can be distributed in our communities,” said Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone

Cherry, 59 of Tarboro, and Reams. 53, of Scotland Neck, were both charged with two counts of trafficking heroin and were being held under $30,000 secured bond. They are scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
